Mbarara University of Science and Technology (MUST) has appointed its alumnus, Mr. Ambrose Kariyo Mugisha, as the new Dean of Students, marking a leadership transition aimed at strengthening student welfare and campus life.
Mr. Mugisha, a graduate of the Faculty of Science, Class of 2004, returns to MUST after more than two decades of professional experience in education and institutional leadership.
His appointment represents a “homecoming” and reinforces the university’s emphasis on nurturing leaders drawn from its own academic community.

Before joining MUST, Mr. Mugisha served as Head of Education and Training at the Institute of Certified Public Accountants of Uganda (ICPAU), where he oversaw professional standards and training programmes. The role provided him with extensive experience in management, policy implementation, and administrative leadership.
Earlier in his career, Mr. Mugisha worked as an Education Officer and a Teacher of Chemistry at Kinyansano Girls’ High School and Ntungano High School between 2005 and 2014. During this period, he developed strong skills in mentorship and student engagement.
As he assumes office, Mr. Mugisha has pledged to uphold the “human side” of leadership while serving the student body. He takes over from Mr. Emmanuel Kyagaba and is expected to guide the Department of Student Affairs with a focus on student welfare, sports development, and continuity in service delivery.
University officials say the appointment positions Mr. Mugisha to lead what has been described as a “winning team” at the Department of Student Affairs, as MUST continues to prioritise academic excellence alongside student-centered support systems.
