European Round Up: Arsenal, Barcelona, PSG, Wolfsburg win domestic cup titles

Four of the European domestic cups titles were decided on Saturday 30th may 2015 and we take a look at what transpired.

The FA CUP

Holders Arsenal won the FA Cup for a record 12th time on Saturday 30th may, outclassing Aston Villa 4-0 at Wembley with stunning goals from Theo Walcott and Alexis Sanchez setting up victory.

Per Mertesacker and Olivier Giroud were also on target as the Londoners sealed their biggest winning margin in a final of the world’s oldest knockout competition.

Arsene Wenger also became the most successful FA Cup manager of modern times, guiding his side to a sixth triumph in their 19th final.

The Coupe de France.

The only team from outside the top divisions, Auxerre, came up against Qatar-backed Paris Saint-Germain in the Coupe de France final.

The Ligue 2 side defended for their life and had some good attacks; though they were not good enough as they were eventually beaten  1-0 by PSG.

Auxerre had not played any big side and it was a tough call to beat up the Ligue 1 champions in the final.

Paris Saint-Germain has been dominant in French football; particularly since Qatar Sports Investments bought the club in 2011going on to lift three Ligue 1 Titles to date.

Laurent Blanc’s side were not exactly  dominant against Auxerre having had a poor start in the first half but went to win thanks to Edinson Cavani’s second half goal.

DFB-Pokal Final sends Kloop out with a loss.

The German Cup final in Berlin saw two of the best attacking sides in Bundesliga coming up against each other.

Wolfsburg who finished in second-place in the Bundesliga played against Borussia Dortmund who were in seventh place.

With Jurgen Klopp’s last match in charge, Borussia Dortmund was expected to win the cup for their manager against Wolfsburg.

The BVB team had a perfectly start after they took the lead over Wolfsburg in the first five minutes through Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.

Wolfsburg however had other ideas as it took them only 17 minutes to equalize, then score two more goals going into halftime to give the DFB-Pokal final its 3–1 full-time score.

Dortmund experienced the same showings which have been ever present in their Bundesliga games of not killing off games.

They failed to contain Kevin De Bruyne and Bas Dost handing Wolfsburg the trophy and a sore sending off of their manager Jorgen Klopp.

Dortmund had hoped for a positive ending for Klopp, the manager that has brought much success and improved style of play, but things did not go as planned. Klopp earlier stated that this was his last season with Dortmund and that the time was right for him to leave.

Dieter Hecking’s Wolfsburg deserved the win with his side being one of the best attacking sides in Europe.

It’s the only trophy he has won as a manager since taking the Regionalliga Nord (German fourth tier) in 2002 with VfB Lübeck, it’s Wolfsburg’s first DFB-Pokal triumph and it’s the first time since 2011 a team other than Dortmund and Bayern Munich has won a domestic trophy.

Barcelona’s Treble chase still on in Luis Enrique’s first season

Barcelona outgunned Athletic Bilbao in the Copa del Rey final 3–1 in a battle of the Catalans against the Basques. Lionel Messi produced one of the individualistic goals this season and a good team goal capped by Neymar tap-in put Barça chances of a treble to just one game away from the treble in Luis Enrique’s debut season.

Barça played their full strength team and got a well-deserved 2-0 lead in halftime against a highly motivated Bilbao side.

The second half saw Barcelona containing the game but Bilbao tried to play their way back

Messi ensured Barcelona got a win after he scored a third goal and Bilbao could just master a consolation goal from Inaki Williams.

With the attacking trio of Messi, Neymar and Luis Suárez all fit for the Champions League final against Juventus on 6th June in Berlin,we wait to see who which team will take the trophy.

RELATIONSHIP: How I murdered a snake that was bullying my neighbor’s wife

It is a well-known teaching of our good old teacher Jesus Christ that we should love our neighbors as we love ourselves. In fact it is the other commandment of the two peculiar Bible commandments as reduced from the original ten.

However, this teaching should be construed as the lawyer will say Mutatis Mutandis (with the necessary modifications).

In other words if your neighbor is somebody’s spouse, you should not purport to love them as you love yourself because; well there is somebody who loves them as they love themselves and that’s their spouse…just saying.

Now in the recent weeks I have had two interesting interactions with my neighbors that came with benefits (pardon the pun) and I thought I should share these experiences which have helped me appreciate the essence of keeping good relations with the people that are around us.

The first instance was a couple of weeks back when our neighbor’s wife wanted to kill a snake that had hijacked their bungalow.

Now, our courteous neighbor always carries me in his car because he is my uncle’s acquaintance, and that he had a wife I did not know about was a little puzzling.

However that night when this fate befell the home while he was away, he contacted my uncle who then contacted me to go help out.

Obviously I was excited about the entire experience of having to murder a snake that was bullying our neighbor’s wife. Every man gets excited when they have to play the role of providing security to a woman be it their wife or otherwise.

It actually reminded me of that song where a wife wakes her spouse up in the middle of the night pleading with him to kill a certain rat that is disorganizing their sleep. Obviously some wicked Ugandans have insinuated that the demand to kill the rat in that song symbolized a woman’s quest for what the clever people call coitus but I beg that the debate on the actual import of the rat in that song be for another day.

Anyway back to the story, we went, successfully killed the snake and guess what I discovered? That the Bungalow next door had always housed a beautiful young lady, a niece to the neighbor.

That’s how we discover good things in these neighborhoods where people keep hiding relevant facts behind strong and impenetrable perimeter walls.

How else would I have known if it had not been for that snake! We have since become friends with the girl who is still pursuing her studies at Makerere University, our friendship is growing stronger and I hope in future we shall kill more snakes together since they seem to be the biggest threat to the survival of the members of our neighbor’s family.

The other incident that should have really passed as inconsequential happened a month or so back. We were attending a week-long conference in Grand Imperial Hotel.

As fate would have it, the organizers of the conference decided to transpose my seat in the middle of two ladies’ seats which meant for five days I would

have two fine-looking ladies as my neighbors in a conference, one on my right and the other on my left. I quickly connected with lady on my right. Blame it on this thing they call chemistry. Conversely, the lady on my left simply liked me.

So much that on the very first day of the conference, she entreated me with some sweets she had carried in her bag and being the good neighbor, I secretly shared the sweets with lady on the right.

This impressed lady on my right and consequently she brought sweets for us to share on all the subsequent days of the conference which I consumed without sharing with lady on the left because she always had sweets in her bag anyway.

At the end of day my good neighbor relations had guaranteed me a steady supply of sweets throughout the five days of the conference even when I could not afford to carry them in my bag all the time like my two neighbors.

Makerere University Business School (MUBS) has signed an MOU with Drake University, USA to further strengthen their collaboration and partnership.

The Drake University team visited MUBS from May 25-27, 2015, to explore more opportunities for expanding collaborative programs.

The partnership involves a business skills development programme that will foster research and technology transfer between the two institutions.

The two institutions are desirous of continuing the relationship over the next five years in developing and impacting business skills in the students and staff, the MUBS principal, Prof. Waswa Balunywa, said during the signing of the MOU at MUBS.

Prof. Waswa Balunywa signed on behalf of MUBS, while Prof. Christa Olson did for Drake University. Prof. Olson is the Vice Provost of Drake University.

“When we link with a university in a developed country, we fast-track in the areas of research and technology exchange”. This benchmark makes us come up with business programmes that are related to our economy, Prof. Balunywa observed.

He says that MUBS is fast-tracking with developed universities in order to improve business research and technology transfer for better programmes.

The collaboration will focus on joint research, which will improve the business knowledge of both the students and staff. “We need to have joint research and publications which will impact positively on both the students and members of staff” , Balunywa noted.

The principal said the cooperation will encourage internationalization and enable members of the two institutions to share resources through networking specifically facilitate faculty and staff exchange, student exchange and joint conferences.
