Inspirational Graduation speeches: Never wait for stuff to happen but go out and make stuff to happen

In our second speech of the 5 Most Inspirational Graduation Speeches ever given, Hollywood producer & director Jerry Zucker says he graduated with no employment skills but has still made it in life. The gist of the speech is what he refers to as his 5 rules.

He challenges the new graduate not to be freaked out by the seasoned professionals and he substantiates on this reality by telling the story of Mrs. Zubatsky; who gave professional fire fighters advice by which they were able to put out a fire even when she was not a professional fire fighter.

“There are two morals to this story,” Zucker says, “one, never assume that just because it’s someone’s job, they know how to do it and two, don’t let yourself be intimidated by professionals or their uniforms.”

The celebrated movie producer says “Growing up in Wisconsin, I never knew anyone in the movie business. I never even knew anyone who knew anyone in the movie business.

That world had a mystique that made it seem unattainable to me. But, like Mrs. Zubatsky, I sat on my porch and I watched someone else do it, and I said, ‘I have a better idea.’ And like her, I seized the moment.”

He says new graduates are in a unique position because the time of graduation is a time in life when they have nothing to lose and everything they have acquired of value is locked inside them. Zucker believes such a moment in life is the most appropriate time for anyone to pursue their dreams.

“If you have a better idea, if your plan makes more sense, if you have a vision, then put down your laundry and scream a little bit. Throw your hat into the ring and never let professionals or their uniforms prevent you from telling anyone where to point their hose.” He asserts.

He also emphasizes that in life one should not wait for stuff to happen to him but should go out there and make stuff to happen.

Inspirational Graduation Speeches: The measure of success is what you think about what you've done

Our third pick on the 5 Most Inspirational Graduation Speeches ever given is Prof. Mark. S. Lewis’s commencement speech at the University of Texas in 2000.

In this speech the Clinical Psychology Professor tells new graduates that there are times when you are going to do well, and times when you’re going to fail.

But neither the doing well, nor the failure is the measure of success. The measure of success is what you think about what you’ve done.

“Let me put that in another way: The way to be happy is to like yourself and the way to like yourself is to do only things that make you proud.

He tells a number of interesting stories to illustrate his point but at the end of it all he advises that every graduate should pick these three lessons from his speech

First, he says there is going to come a time in your life when in order to succeed you will have to trust — when you will have to make a big leap of faith — and when that time comes he hopes you (the new graduate) “will swallow your fear and get into the wheelbarrow.”

Second, he says whatever strong belief you now hold about what it means to be successful he hopes you will stay open to the possibility that you’ve got it all wrong and graciously accept your new awareness when it comes, with gratitude and humility.

And third he hopes you’ll always and only do things that make you proud so that you can truly be your own hero.

The 5 Most Inspirational Graduation Speeches ever given

As Makerere University Students look forward to the 65th Graduation, the Campus Times brings you some of the most inspirational graduation speeches ever given. We hope that by sharing this with you, many of you will be inspired and get better perspectives to what the world is; so that when some of your friends meet you 10, 20 or 30 years from now they will find that you’ve lived a life worth celebrating and gladly celebrate with you. In this article we review 5 of the most inspiring graduation speeches ever given.

We pray that you will not just read this article but also click through and read the speeches as given to be inspired like we were when we read them.

We also hope that in your journey through life you will find your true purpose, relentlessly pursue it and contribute to the progress of society by doing the purpose for which you were created.

The first speech we shall review was given by Steve Jobs, the founding C.E.O of Apple Computers who died on October 5th 2011. The central message in the speech is that you have got to find what you love and do it.

Steve Jobs.
Steve Jobs.

In this Speech Steve Jobs takes us through his life- experiences from childhood to the time he founded Apple Computers and the life after he had founded the thriving enterprise.

He speaks of how he was fired from the very company he had founded but what kept him going was the fact that he had always loved what he did.

“Sometimes life hits you in the head with a brick. Don’t lose faith. I’m convinced that the only thing that kept me going was that I loved what I did.”

“You’ve got to find what you love. And that is as true for your work as it is for your lovers.” The celebrated Entrepreneur (RIP) said in the speech.

“Your work is going to fill a large part of your life,” he told the Stanford University Students,“ and the only way to be truly satisfied is to do what you believe is great work. And the only way to do great work is to love what you do.”

“If you haven’t found it yet, keep looking. Don’t settle. As with all matters of the heart, you’ll know when you find it. And, like any great relationship, it just gets better and better as the years roll on. So keep looking until you find it. Don’t settle.”

Though firing him from the company he founded should have dented his spirit and pushed him out of business completely, it rather turned out to be a defining moment in his life as it was then that he met his wife and also founded another company NeXT, which company Apple bought latter in an interesting twist of events and whose inventions led to the renaissance of Apple.

The most interesting bit in this speech though is the story of his drop-out from college. He says if he had not dropped out of college, he would not have attended the calligraphy class in which he acquired excellent typography knowledge which he later incorporated in the development of Mac.

At the time he had no idea that attending that class would contribute to his greater purpose.
