Job Title: Head of Operations

Job Summary: The Head of Operations will have the responsibility of directing, planning, budgeting, and supervision of staff for Operations department of Royal Transit Limited

Key Duties and Responsibilities: 

  • Personnel supervision of all department staff, Fleet Management Officers, Field Accounts Clerks, Fuel Clerks, Truck Drivers, Truck Turn boys, Truck Mechanics, and Head Truck Mechanic, Plant and Equipment operators and Office Personnel.
  • Recommends and implements transportation operations policy established by the company.
  • Develops and controls the operations budget.
  • Directs and assists in the development of routes for projects and be in the field quite often.
  • Directs and assists in the development of Trucks operations schedule time and stop locations for various routes and in the assignment of trucks and plant equipment operators to specific routes.
  • Directs or arranges operations for field trips, and other activities as well as operations for rainy season projects.
  • Directs fleet maintenance program including service and repair, preventive maintenance, and periodic fleet inspections.
  • Supervises daily records maintenance of mileage, materials transported, stops made for use in office report and other reports as needed.
  • Compiles and prepares technical and statistical reports on transportation operations, expenditures, and inventories for administration and Board meetings.
  • Directs transportation payroll and personnel functions including interviewing, employee evaluation, training, and discipline.
  • Checks and authorizes for payroll, bills for trucks repairs and contracted services.
  • Directs preparation of purchase specifications for vehicle and purchase requisitions and/or bids.
  • May conduct disciplinary meetings to determine cause for suspension of transportation privileges.

Qualifications, Skills and Experience: 

  • The applicant must have attained graduation from a regionally accredited or NCHE registered college or university with  Bachelor’s degree, plus three (3) years of full time or its part time equivalent paid experience in transportation operations  in one or more of the following areas: planning, budgeting, routing, scheduling, arranging contracted services for materials transportation, office management (including responsibilities for personnel and payroll operations), one (1) year of which shall have included supervision; OR Graduation from high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma, plus seven (7) years of full time or its part time equivalent paid experience as described in (A), or (1) year of which shall have included supervision; OR, Any equivalent combination of training and experience as defined by the limits of (A) and (B).
  • Thorough knowledge of Ugandan transport sector laws as it pertains to materials transportation, trucks and equipments operator training, and medical standards for operators.
  • Should have agreed principles by his superiors and loyal to the latter ; sensitive to issues of business sustainability ; appreciate culture in areas where the company operates and be self driven to love his work
  • Thorough knowledge of Transportation Law as it pertains to inspection and construction of trucks.
  • Detailed knowledge of Motor Vehicle Law as it pertains to driver qualifications, truck and plant and equipments operations, and traffic and safety requirements and precautions.
  • Thorough knowledge of negotiation skills for new jobs
  • Good knowledge of records maintenance methods and practices.
  • Proven experience in budget preparation and control of budgets.
  • Good administrative and supervisory skills; ability to plan, assigns, and reviews the work of others.
  • Ability to prepare required Ugandan transport industry reports including narrative and tabular presentations.
  • Ability to write purchase specifications for transportation contracts, review bills, and authorize payment, ability to maintain detailed records.
  • Possess the ability to deal effectively with clients and occasionally participate or do business development.
  • Ability to develop, maintain and supervise inventory control procedures.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Good knowledge of computer skills required.
  • Possess a valid Uganda Driver’s License or is willing to obtain one.
  • Physically able to perform essential functions of the position
