Makerere University student Guild leaders have embarked on a campaign aimed at re-branding the reputation of the institution. Dubbed the ‘MAK Varsity Awards,’ the campaign shall kick off with nominations on 2nd October 2015 at the university’s freedom square.

During a press briefing held on 23rd September, Makerere university Guild President, Bala David Bwiruka noted of how the university since its establishment in 1922 has been in the media for good and bad reasons with little attention paid to the various contributions made by various individuals for their exceptional services and contributions.

“This is a project aimed at rebranding the institution. It is a project the guild will run every year to motivate and change the mindset for the students. We have to reward students when they work hard, not only when they fail (negative reinforcement),” said Bala.

Running under the theme ‘Motivate to Inspire’ the awards will recognize exceptional achievement by staff and students in different categories.

“We want outstanding individuals in every category who will in turn be ambassadors in rebranding the university.” Bala added.

The Guild Information Minister, Davidson Ndyabahika said that the criteria for the awards will base on; exceptional achievement in any arena, notable endeavour which has made a difference to the university, a substantive contribution which has enhanced the reputation of the university, activity which has had a noticeably positive impact for students, staff and or the community and an individual achievement or sustained achievement over a period of time.

He added that nominations will be done on social media and by email while voting shall incorporate both social media and SMS.

Kabagambe Cyriaco, the Dean of Students applauded the guild for such an initiative and pledged the university’s support to such engagements.

“We are teaching institutions and we help young people excel both academically and in leadership.  This must be done in relation to the core values of the university. Doing this requires professionalism and humility,” he said before adding

“This is a way of students leaders should utilize energy in the right direction… it is more exciting if it’s done for students who are here. It inspires and motivates people (them).”

The awards will be held on 15th October.

The awards have attracted different sponsors with different offers. Centenary Bank delivered a cheque worth 5million whereas Brussels airlines Deputy Station Manager Uganda, Kenneth Bainomugisha highlighted of her organisations offer; an economic class return ticket for one winning the project of the year. The airline will also give a discount of 10% to participants to any European destinations between 2nd October and 30th November.
