Job Title:     Structural Engineer

Organisation: Aga Khan University (AKU)

Duty Station: Kampala, Uganda

Reports to: Project Manager

About US:

The Aga Khan University (AKU) is a private, not-for-profit, international University first established in 1983, with 13 teaching sites in 8 countries. It is a non-denominational institution open to all, irrespective of religion, ethnicity, gender or national origin. AKU has offers academic programmes in nursing, medicine and education for and in countries in East Africa.

Job Summary:  The Structural Engineer will be responsible for reviewing structural engineering design and drawings, checking all drawings for coordination, completeness and constructability, inspecting and observing all testing carried out for various structural materials and elements and monitoring & supervising the works on site to ensure conformance of work executed with the contract specifications. The selected candidate will also be involved in the review of any engineering requirements for other AKU projects as deemed necessary by the Projects Director

Key Duties and Responsibilities: 

  • Review of all structural and architectural drawings
  • Monitoring and supervision of day-to-day construction activities
  • Monitoring quality assurance systems to ensure testing is done as scheduled Observing and overseeing all testing activity
  • Providing recommendations for independent client testing of materials
  • Attending site management and design review meetings and following up to ensure resolution of all issues.
  • Manage quality control processes.
  • Review field inspection reports from consultants throughout the lifecycle of the project. Track the progress and quality of work being performed by design disciplines/trades.
  • Assist commercial manager with monthly evaluations.

Qualifications, Skills and Experience: 

  • The Structural Engineer must hold a Bachelor’s degree in Civil or Structural Engineering; an additional Master’s degree in either field being an added advantage
  • At least ten (10) years of relevant professional experience in design and supervision of construction projects, of which at least 5 years must be with an international contractor/ consultant outside Uganda
  • Proficiency in MS Project, AutoCAD and Revit.
  • Strong multi-tasking abilities in an extremely fast-paced environment
