The newly founded Islamic University in Uganda’s Habib Medical School is set to receive support from Doctors Worldwide, a non-governmental organization based in Turkey.

The NGO will send 6 professors to assist in teaching and building the capacity of the teaching staff as well as boosting research at the school.

The Rector made the revelation during the 223rd Executive Board meeting held in the University boardroom at the Main campus, Mbale.

“Doctors Worldwide Turkey has promised to send 6 Professors including one who will be the Pioneer Dean of the School. Turkey also promised to support us in capacity building in the fields of Medicine and Engineering through developing curricula in Engineering and Medicine at post graduate level,” the Rector said.

Early this year, the organization sent a three-man delegation to Uganda to assess how they can intervene. The delegation was led by Prof. Dr. Orhan Alimoðlu, Head of General Surgery Department at Istanbul Medeniyet University, Dr. Metin Tunç, Director of Investment Department, Istanbul Health Authority and Dr. Selimcan Azizoðlu, Project Manager, Doctors Worldwide Turkey.

The delegation visited a number of medical facilities in Kampala including Kibuli Muslim Hospital, Mulago Hospital, Makerere University Medical School, Mengo and Rubaga Hospitals. They also visited the National Council for Higher Education to acquaint themselves with how the Higher education sector is managed in Uganda.

Habib Medical School was named after a Saudi based Habib Family which offered seed support for the school establishment. The school has also received support from the University of Lahore, Pakistan and many other organizations.
