UWONET Inter-University Freshers Camp Addresses Sexual Violence at Campus

University students have been urged to be aware of and fight sexual violence at their numerous campuses.

This was during the Inter-University freshers camp organised by Uganda Women’s Network (UWONET) that hosted a total of 150 students from Universities across Uganda at Makerere University main campus.

Angella Asiimwe, a legal officer at FIDA Uganda who also works at an NGO Akina Mama wa Afrika (AMwA) encouraged students to be ambassadors against all forms of sexual abuse.

“We are sensitising you to sensitise others. United women can…so let us cross barriers, build bridges and unleash power,

“Don’t participate in sexual violence. Stand up against strangers and perpetrators of sexual violence; we need to trust and support people who speak out or feel harassed,” Asiimwe said.

Josaphat Byamugisha, from the department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Makerere University also told student to prioritize their studies for a better future.

Students also shared their views and experiences on sexual violence in show of solidarity against the vice.

The event was one of the many activities organized by UWONET to celebrate the 4th National Women’s Week.
