A 20-floor presidential Library that is named after the third President of Kenya, Mwai Kibaki has been launched at Makerere University. The launch was graced by Ugandan Vice President, Edward Kiwanuka Ssekandi, Former Kenyan President, Mwai Kibaki, Minister of Education, Jessica Alupo,  Makerere university dons among others. This was on Friday 13th February 2013.

Prof. Mondo Kagonyera, Chancellor Makerere University said the university chose to name the library after Mwai Kibaki because he was the first African to graduate with a 1st Class Honours Degree from Makerere in the Arts in 1955.

Kibaki was also the first African to graduate with distinction in Public Finance course at the London School of Economics in 1958.

The Library will house the Mwai Kibaki Endowed Chair in Economics and the East African Mwai Kibaki Centre for Leadership, Public Finance and Public Policy.

The structure to be completed in five years time is to cost $50million. Government of Uganda will contribute $5 million towards Mwai Kibaki Presidential Library.

While speaking at the launch, President Kibaki appreciated Makerere University for the recognition which he said was happy to witness during his life time and called for support to ensure its successful

completion so that the library benefits the young generation.
