Scholarships: African swine fever (ASF) is a highly infectious disease, endemic to Sub‐Saharan Africa. The ASF virus circulates in two cycles; a sylvatic cycle and a domestic cycle.

The sylvatic cycle involves African wild pigs, such warthogs Phacochoerus africanus and bushpigs Potamochoerus larvatus, and endophilic Onrithodoros tampans.

Wild pigs do not display clinical signs of the disease unlike domestic naive pigs, for which the ASF virus has a near 100% mortality rate. Ndumo Game Reserve (NGR) is located within the Swine Fever Control Area of South Africa, on the border with Mozambique in KwaZulu‐Natal Province.

The aim of this study is to assess the potential risk of the presence and maintenance of ASF in Ndumo Game Reserve and the NGR wildlife‐livestock Interface.

Thee is a position for an MSc candidate to execute an exciting Research MSc degree to study the ecology of the potential sylvatic cycle of African swine fever in the NGR. The research is funded and supported by the University of Pretoria and Agricultural Research for Development CIRAD
Research activities will consist on:

  • Census of wild pigs (warthogs and bushpigs) in the NGR
  • Collection of tampans in warthog burrows
  • Analysis of the presence of ASFV in tampans (optional) at ARC‐OVI
  • Implementation of questionnaires among small scale farmers at the interface of NGR

Conditions:
A living stipend of 3000 ZAR/month will be provided during field activities
Basic accommodation is available at the premises of KZN Wildlife in NGR
Vehicle and fuel for field work will be provided by UP
Basic training on line transects census, tampan collection and laboratory analysis of ticks for thepresence of ASFV will be provided to the student.

Requirements:
A degree in veterinary science, biological science, ecology or natural science.
Previous field work experience with wildlife will be an advantage.
Basic knowledge in statistical analysis using R, STATA or another software package
The candidate should be able to spend approximately 4 month/year in NGR.

Sr. Margaret Aceng, passed away yesterday morning at Arua where she had gone on a mission.

It is sad that death robbed Gulu University of her loving and motherly services at a time she is needed most.

Report has it that she succumbed to cerebral emboli occluding blood supply to her brain and instantly dying of stroke (hypoxic -ischemic ) just like in pulmonary embolism,

The body of the late Rev. Sir. has been received at St. Mary’s Hospital Lacor  for postmortem and further treatments by the university Doctor and other university officials . Then after, it will be taken to the convent in Lacor.

The Dry Lands Integrated Development Project will implement multi sectoral interventions aimed at holistically addressing challenges faced by pastoralist communities that directly contribute to the objective of reducing vulnerability, building resilience, and accelerating the achievements of the UN Millennium Development Goals mainly in the districts of Moroto, Napak, Nakapiripiriti and Amudat.

Job Summary: The Human Resource & Administration Manager will be responsible tor handling the Human resource and administration issues of the project on behalf and with guidance from the Regional HR Manager based at Nairobi.

Key Duties and Responsibilities: 

  • Prepare, maintain and regularly update personnel files at the site level
  • Steer all personnel recruitment processes
  • Oversee the medical and other insurance files for the project staff.
  • Identify and organise personnel on job training needs to help improve performance of staff and for motivation of staff
  • Guide staff on all HR issues at the site in consultation with the regional HR Manager
  • Ensure personnel recruitments follow the set out guidelines for the organisation
  • Quickly resolve all lower level personnel conflicts at the site before they are escalated and advise management whenever intervention by management is required.
  • Attend to staff welfare issues.
  • Prepare, update and always keep an updated leave register for all staff.
  • Identify and be the link with suitable insurance service providers for the organisation.
  • Supervise the work of operations staff including front desk personnel, Drivers and machine operators, Office assistants.
  • Ensure timely requisitioning of office supplies.
  • Be the custodian of records of staff attendance to work and provide timely information to the Finance Sector for the Payroll preparation. 

Qualifications, Skills and Experience:
