About USAID Project:
USAID Uganda is funding a new five-year Youth Leadership for Agriculture program to increase economic
opportunities for hundreds of thousands of Ugandan female and male youth aged 10 to 35, in agriculture- related fields, in order to increase their incomes and build entrepreneurial, leadership, and workforce readiness skills. Pending confirmation of funding, TechnoServe will lead this program in select districts
in Uganda, including Northern Uganda, through market systems and facilitative approaches. This program will focus on achieving two specific objectives by partnering with both public and private entities: (1) increased incomes of youth working in agricultural value chains (specifically maize, beans and coffee); and (2) improved skills development (entrepreneurship, employability, leadership, and life skills) obtained through formal and non-formal education and training organizations.
Job Summary:The Communications Specialist is responsible for developing and implementing campaigns and outreach to target youth in Uganda through the media (radio, newspaper, internet, etc.). S/he is responsible for the overall success of coordination and communication to increase youth participation (particularly for females) in agriculture-related business throughout targeted regions of Uganda. The incumbent will be able to manage multiple complex tasks and be able to effectively engage with media, partners, staff members, and other stakeholders. S/he will be responsible for the communication of learnings from the program to stakeholders including the donor, government, private sector etc. He /she will need to work closely with the Monitoring, Evaluation & Learning Manager to understand the learnings and communicate them effectively to inform and influence systems change.
Qualifications, Skills and Experience: 
  • The applicant should hold a good Bachelor’s degree in international relations, business, communications, or other relevant field
  • At least six years of related work experience in Uganda
  • Strong writing skills in both English and local languages: ability to synthesize complex issues into engaging, relevant content for specific audiences (prior experience in journalism or public relations helpful) Prior experience working with media in Uganda to get messages out to wide audiences in rural contexts
  • Significant experience disseminating information and communicating lessons learned to diverse stakeholders and donors
  • Excellent written and oral communications skills are required as is the ability to set priorities,
    manage time well and work independently.
  • Solid understanding of media landscape for international development and business preferred
  • Keen interest in, and knowledge of international development, youth development, gender issues and/or business solutions to poverty
  • Fluent in written and spoken English; fluency in one or more local languages is an added advantage.
  • Demonstrated experience of Uganda’s private sector, particularly private sector companies in the agricultural sector
