Janet Museveni who is the Minister for Education and Sports has asked lecturers at Makerere University to resume their work as soon as the University opens on January 19th.

While speaking at the the University’s 69th graduation ceremony on Tuesday, the minister said that the government has already put up the funds to settle the arrears.

“I wish to remind the leadership of different categories of staff at public universities that there is no reason what so ever for insisting on industrial action,” said Ms Museveni.

“Let us not appear ungrateful or insensitive, something that has caused paralysis in operations at the public universities on account of matters for which solutions have already been found and provided,” she said.

. “It is evident that after supplementary funding being availed for salary enhancement and payment of arrears and the new structure almost being finalised, we shall find a lasting solution to unending demands,” the minister added.

President Museveni acting as the Chief Guest at the ceremony also condemned the lecturers lack of faith and patience and that their matter will be settled since everything is priotized.
“We have already made moves so Government University staff, please repent the sins of little faith. Things will be done. Done not according to miracles but by struggle and I can assure you that we shall succeed so what we need is patience,” the President said.

The Makerere University staff said they won’t resume work unless the new structure is implemented despite the government releasing the Shs29b for their salary enhancements through the minister of finance.
