Kyambogo university Guild Final Rally Turns Bloody, FDC Candidate Survives Mob

Micheal Ashaba, one of the guild contestants

Michael Ashaba, the guild aspirant on the FDC ticket, survived mob by the opposition supporters during the last open rally at the Kyambogo University Western playground today afternoon.

Police provided security to Ashaba who was attacked by the crowd of frustrated students holding sticks, metals and stones

The rioting students accused Ashaba for mobilizing the suspected Makerere University students to join and disorganize the guild race arrangements.

“We have seen most over our old students who are at Makerere and MUBS in the Ashaba camp…if he does not trust us, then let him change and go to study from Makerere,” Said one of the frustrated students.

After the speeches of only candidates, Joseph Ochieng and Patricia Kasemeire, Ashaba appeared two hours late with a crowd of supports lifting him and the posters high. They went on to make noise that prompted the next to speak candidate, Simon Peter Opio, to refuse to address the rally with such noise.

The arrival of Sarah Kansiime with her supporters sparked off the fight between the rival Camps of the later and Ashaba since they were all in FDC but later Kansiime came as independent after losing the primaries.

The Kyambogo University Electoral Commission later called off the event without rescheduling it for any other day. Embattled Eight candidates jumped out of their seats shouting at the EC’s decision.

“Why should this be called off because of the chaos just caused by a single candidate …this EC is showing signs of corruption. Let the candidate be disqualified from the race as the rules provide,” said Joseph Ochieng, one of the strongest candidate.

Efforts to reach Ashaba were futile as his cell phones were off and could not be accessed.

Kyambogo University will hold the Guild, GRCs and Chairmen of halls elections on Tuesday March 7, 2017 at the respective Faculties.

Students are requested to come with the University Identity Cards or for the First years to present any University document with a stamp and a photo of the owner.
