Makerere University is looking for sh43b to set up a peace Centre, this will be the first of its kind in Africa.
The Centre is aimed at training students in peace and conflict prevention in different parts of the world that are politically unstable.
According to Emmanuel Katongole, a member of Muyenga rotary club supporting Makerere’s project, there were only six peace centres until February when Makerere was added.
On Monday (April 26, 2021), Emmanuel said the foundation focuses on seven areas in which peace is key, during the Support Africa Peace Fund and the first-ever concert that was held at Speke Resort Hotel in Munyonyo.
Katongole said through the peace centre, the rotary is to pay full cost for 40 students to study peace and conflict prevention in different parts of the world that are politically unstable.
He revealed that every student to be sponsored to study peace will require a minimum of $15,000.
“As rotary, we don’t have any businesses but we collect our money through fundraisings and the money is kept in perpetuity into an endowment fund,” he said.
He added that in Africa they currently have two types of funds which include Africa peace fund and the Sam Owori memorial peace fund and these are all aimed at bringing peace to the world.
“My appeal to every one of you is to support the cause of peace in any form whether financial or anything but the most important is to prevent conflict at any cost,” Katongole added.
